On Saturday, May 6th, the DC Abortion Fund (DCAF) held its annual Game-a-Thon fundraiser at Penn Social in downtown DC. I helped take pictures for the event and, in the process, got a chance to meet some fellow pro-choice activists. I’ve written about volunteering for DCAF in the past, and on Saturday I got another glimpse at the collective passion of DCAF’s board members and fundraisers. It is amazing to me that an organization that is entirely volunteer-run is as efficient and well-organized as DCAF. Witnessing the dedication and enthusiasm of everyone involved in organizing and raising money for the 2017 Game-a-Thon, I can understand why this is possible.
The premise of the Game-a-Thon is simple–you form or join a team and raise funds with your teammates prior to the event. Then, you show up and enjoy an afternoon filled with games, snacks and inspirational company. This year, the 39 teams (all of which had completely brilliant names, such as “Resisting B*tch Face”, “Grab em by the Pencey”, “Rock’n’Roe” and “The Notorious IUDs”) collectively raised close to $104,000, far surpassing the fundraising goal of $70,000 and securing half of DCAF’s annual budget.
If you missed this year’s Game-a-Thon, you can still donate to DCAF here. And, you can start thinking of a witty name for your 2018 Game-a-Thon fundraising team!
Here are a few pictures of the event, including a list of all the awesome team names:

Note: the fundraising for the Game-a-Thon continued through today, so the total amount raised is currently $103,917.
